Sitting exams – information for parents and guardians
When your child’s teacher assesses that they are ready to sit an exam they will speak to you. You are welcome to also discuss progress towards exams at any time with your child’s teacher. Once a parent/guardian has confirmed that they are happy for the child to be entered, the teacher will share all the details with our Musical Director.
On the day that the exam entries open, our Music Director will make all the entries for that term. We will aim to get an exam date late in the exam period. We need to have all the exams on the same day so that we can ensure our accompanist can attend. If you require a specific day, you can make the entry yourself, but we can not guarantee our accompanist will be able to make the exam. We can help you find someone suitable instead. Once we have made the exam entry, you will need to reimburse us for the exam fee. We usually use the ABRSM exam board, but your child’s teacher will confirm this with you.
QYMC will arrange aural lessons for the term of the exam. The timings of these will be confirmed before the start of term. We will also arrange for some practice sessions with an accompanist.
Our exam procedure and the additional preparatory classes are included within the Beginner Instrumentalist, Instrumentalist and Scholar packages.
You are still responsible for paying the accompanist for their work on the day of the exam. The fee would be: £25 for Grades 1-5, £37 for grades 6-7 and £50 for grade 8. If you make your exam entry separately and therefore are arranging the accompanist yourself, we recommend these fees but the accompanist might suggest something different.
If you have any questions please come to speak to us.
